Chapter 5

Rainn

The door crashed open. The girl beside me stirred. “Rainn! We have an emergency.”

Shit. It was my assistant, Eric. “Be right back,” I whispered in her ear.

I threw on my sweatpants and ran downstairs. “Office!” I yelled as we walked to the office on the first floor. He was pacing around my office.

“Sorry, boss. I couldn’t wait.”

“How come I take one break for a night and everything crashes?”

“It’s the big merger with Fyffe Tech. We hit a hiccup. One accountant found an issue with one of their papers. We may have to call it off. Unless it’s just an error.”

“How ‘bout we hire someone else to go through the information? No connection with Fyffe. No connection with Rainn. It’s not an emergency like you are going on about.”

My assistant rubbed his hands together as he paused. His brown hair was messy from worrying his hair. “I don’t know. Will this even work out?”

“Hire someone now. I’ll be in the office soon. I have to wrap up with something—”

A door slammed, and my shoulders fell. As much as I wanted it to be anything else—a gust of wind, a housekeeper, a bear—I knew it had to be Claire. “Really, Eric? Couldn’t you have called?”

“Your phone was off.”

“It could have waited three hours.”

“Why are you pissed?”

“The girl I was with just left. I didn’t have her number. She’s a local actress. Can you contact her agent and set up a lunch or date or something with her? I really liked her. I didn’t think an actress would be like that.”

“What actress?”

“Claire Trinner.”

“Wow. She’s really hot.”

I smiled. “Yes, she is. Don’t flirt with her.” He pursed his lips. “Fine. Get dressed. We can take the car together to the office.”

I nodded. “Wait here.” I ran up the stairs and sure enough, the tag was on the ground and she was gone. Dressing quickly, I grabbed the badge. I laughed as it reminded me of a fairy tale.

“What’s so funny, boss?”

“She left her VIP tag here. Reminded me of something. Let’s go.”

The rest of the day was a rush of hiring new staff, the usual administrative things I did, and everything was looking up. There was a consultant that could come in today and start today. Everything was looking up for me. Next, I needed to woo Claire. This woman was incredible, and I needed her in my life. She was right. I needed more in my life than just work. Eric said he reserved a room for us at a fusion restaurant I liked. As I walked out of the front doors, there was a small yip from the lobby. I paused as I looked around a set of columns. An echo of footsteps was the only thing in the hallway. I shook my head and went to the restaurant.

I arrived first. I ordered a bottle of champagne as I waited for Claire to come. As I was looking at my phone, the door opened and my eyes first saw her legs. Except her legs were too pale.
